Have you ever thought about what category of purchase your product or service falls into?

Maybe it’s never occurred to you that you should know but it helps to make you a more effective salesperson.  Most products or services fall into 4 categories (listen to the video above to hear the explanations and examples – you might be surprised it’s not so cut and dry what falls into which category):

  • Luxury
  • Necessity
  • Functional
  • Improvement

A lot of times the it depends on the person you’re talking to and understanding your prospect’s view of it, will help you connect deeper with them and be a more intuitive seller.

You see, your prospect wants what they’re buying to improve their life in intellectual, physical, spiritual, emotional or social ways.  What do you believe your client wants most from you?  Which benefits are they going to experience from working with you?

Once they start thinking about purchasing something, everyone, whether consciously or unconsciously, puts each purchase they make into the above 4 categories and then they justify their purchase with these eight things below:

1.     Quality of life – improves life

2.     Pleasure – feel good

3.     Improve or beautify surroundings

4.     Education

5.     Relaxation/ Stress Relief

6.     Entertainment

7.     Planned purchase – larger purchases that require more thought

8.     Replace existing item

So now that you know …

How do you think you can apply this knowledge now to improve your sales process?
